Move over emerald, Pantone has announced their ‘it’ colour of 2014 – Radiant Orchid, a pinky purple hue that apparently ‘blooms with confidence and magical warmth’
All this excitement has had lifestyle PR agencies like Polkadot PR in a flap over new pitches and trend reporting.
For over a decade Pantone have been announcing a colour of the year and it has become somewhat of a hotly anticipated decision, inspiring fashion, beauty and interior choices for the coming year. The world renowned colour team apparently assess the entertainment industry, the arts, hot new travel destinations, socio-economic conditions and even sports teams to figure out which colour suits the year.
Next year’s fashion has already graced the runways and there was undoubtedly a prominence of pink and purple hues. Big trend leaders like Chanel and Prada favoured these sweet tones, something that will no doubt influence the entire fashion industry, and something that Pantone no doubt considered when making their choice.
In the coming months expect to see Radiant Orchid infiltrate the market, from toasters, food packaging, and accent walls to lipsticks and dresses – purple is the new black.
While it’s easy to look at the colour of the year decision as just another marketing ploy, it can serve as a nice time capsule of our era. If the 70s were all about burnt oranges and browns then seemingly the 2010s will be a decade of bright, bold choices.
Our client base is certainly embracing the trend, from purple hued hair (see JUSTICE Professional Perfect Violet Shampoo) to mauve swimwear from Baku – it’s not hard to sense a pattern. See our best picks for a Radiant year ahead!
